Disability Equality Training (DET)
Some of SYCIL's staff and Trustees were the first in the country to design and deliver Disability Equality Training as far back as 1983 when they were involved with Derbyshire Centre for Inclusive Living. This training has been developed and is now delivered to a range of groups and organisations across South Yorkshire.
DET is based on the Social Model of Disability developed by Disabled people and the aim of the training is to identify and address discriminatory forms of practice towards Disabled people. We achieve this by:
- Exploring the root causes of exclusion and discrimination
- Questioning some of the common stereotypes, myths and misconceptions about disability
- Examining language and the way this can perpetuate the inequality of disabled people
- Looking at work practices, and planning strategies to implement change
- Promoting communication between disabled and non-disabled people
- Promoting disability as an Equality Issue
