UKONLINE:
UKOnline is a National programme aimed at getting the 8 million people not online, using the internet.
SYCIL recently became a UKOnline Center and now have several staff and volunteers trained as UKOnline Digital Champions who can now support you through the UKOnline training programme which starts with the very basics, mouse and keyboard skiils, emailing, using the internet safely and search engines.
The beauty of UKOnline is that you can go at your own pace, the support given is on a one to one basis and you do not feel pressured to keep up with a class full of people.
SYCIL's UKOnline sessions are Monday afternoons and Wednesday mornings. Prior booking is essential by calling Kim Nightingale on 01302 89 29 49 or emailing kim.n@sycil.org

How SYCIL have helped in the past!
Ben, and how computer training has helped him…
… Before I was injured I was never happy using computers. I didn't have time for games and I never used them in my army role. I was more interested in being outside and doing physical things than sitting at a desk - that's my way of saying I was not very good at academic things! After I was injured that had to change. The only way I could keep in touch with my friends was by computer. I couldn't talk and my hand shook so much that I couldn't write either. I had to learn to email. As I've got better and better, I've had to start thinking about new skills and a job, hopefully in the army. I started a computer course at SYCIL with Ray and it has been great. Ray had to start from scratch with switching the computer on, but we have moved on by miles since then! I never thought that I would enjoy the course but I really have. Its given me new things to think about and I don't have to ask people for information, I can look for it myself. I know I can never go back to my gun in the army, but I'm sure I can have a role in the army with my computer skills. At 26 I need a job I can't watch TV all day!

Alternative Access Equipment
Use of computers and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is now fundamental to most aspects of daily life from work to leisure. In addition ICT empowers and enriches many people's lives bringing together communities, opening up new vistas of opportunity and providing access to a wealth of services and information. It is essential therefore to ensure that all members of the community have the ability to access the technology and use the equipment.
People with difficulties accessing ICT via conventional methods may benefit from the provision of specialist mechanisms or devices, such as:
Enabling or altering built in facilities within software (e.g. windows)
- Sticky keys
- Magnifier
- Narrator
- Mouse speed
Or specific devices such as:
- Alternative mouse pointers
- Colour schemes
- Font and icon sizes
- Alternative keyboards such as mini, expanded and coloured keyboards
- Alternative mice such as a trackball, joystick, touchpad
- Magnification software and hardware
- Screen reading software
- Speech recognition software
- Switch access with specialist accessibility software
All our courses require you to attend a Pre Course Assessment; this lets us find out what your computer equipment requirements are.
